Objectives:
To describe the use of the V-Loc™ suture with the Endo Stitch™ device (Medtronic®) for mesometrial imbrication of ventrally positioned uteri to a more horizontal position in subfertile mares.
Methods:
Medical records of four mares undergoing laparoscopic mesometrial imbrication using the suturing device with absorbable suture at an equine hospital, as a treatment for reduced fertility due to a ventrally positioned uterus and delayed uterine clearance, between January and October 2020 were reviewed. Data included signalment, diagnosis, anesthesia, surgery time, and post-operative management with long-term fertility outcomes.
Results:
Laparoscopic uteropexy using an ergonomic suturing device with absorbable barbed suture reduced surgical time compared to previous techniques. The uterus was successfully elevated to a more horizontal position in all four mares. No intra- or post-operative complications were noted. Three mares became pregnant the same year as surgery and produced a live foal for three subsequent seasons.
Conclusions:
The use of the V-Loc™ suture combined with Endo Stitch™ was technically easier than previously described uteropexy techniques, resulting in faster surgery without complications.
