Objectives:

Feline osteoarthritis (OA) significantly impacts the health and well-being of cats, leading to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and diminished quality of life. Common symptoms include difficulty in movement, reluctance to play, decreased grooming, reduced social interaction, and increased irritability. This study aimed to investigate the safety and efficacy of CBD in cats with OA through a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study involving 16 cats.

Methods:

Sixteen client-owned cats diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA) were randomized into two groups, receiving either a 2 mg/kg dose of CBD paste or a placebo twice daily for six weeks. A two-week washout period followed, after which cats switched treatments. The study used the validated DORFOP questionnaire for owner feedback, the NC State TRiP scoring system for clinical evaluation and blood tests. These were performed at baseline and 6, 8, and 14 weeks.

Results:

Cats receiving the CBD paste showed significant reductions in pain scores and improvements in mobility, as reported in DORFOP scores compared to those receiving placebo. TRiP scores further supported these findings, with lower pain scores and increased cooperation observed in cats receiving paste after six weeks.

Conclusions:

These findings suggest CBD may be promising for managing OA-related pain in cats. Preliminary results from eight cats indicate that CBD paste may be beneficial for pain management in feline OA. Blood tests revealed no significant abnormalities, suggesting a favorable safety profile for CBD paste.
