Expires: 08-09-2025

Veterinary Associates Equine, Auckland, New Zealand

Rare opportunity to work as an equine surgeon in Auckland, New Zealand

Veterinary Associates Equine is seeking a board-certified surgeon or surgical residency-trained veterinarian to join our surgery team. Currently there are two ACVS-certified equine surgeons and one ACVIM-certified internist among the 21 veterinarians working for Veterinary Associates.

Veterinary Associates is an equine ambulatory and referral practice located in Karaka, New Zealand with satellite practices in Kumeu, West Auckland and Warkworth, North Auckland. Karaka is a lovely rural community located just thirty minutes from Auckland’s central business district. The practice has a truly varied surgical, medical, sports medicine, and reproductive caseload. Amongst our clients are some large Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing and breeding operations, amateur to high level showjumpers, eventers and dressage horses, a large hunting community, as well as some successful polo and polocrosse competitors and breeders.

The work environment is attractive; our custom-built hospital has all the latest equine medical technology. This includes a fully equipped surgical suite, dynamic endoscopy, digital radiography, ultrasonography, dentistry gear, regenerative therapies, including an in-house stem cell culture laboratory, and an in-house diagnostic laboratory.

The surgical suite is equipped with modern arthroscopy and laparoscopy equipment with gas anaesthetic ventilation and monitoring (including blood gas), two recovery rooms, and assisted recovery set-up. Standing surgery can be performed in stocks with a headstand for upper airway surgery or in padded stocks for reproductive surgery.

Our facility has a straight trot-up area, large soft lunge ring, small hard lunge ring, and multiple diagnostic rooms. There are stalls and yards with cameras, small and large paddock areas, and two dedicated isolation stables.

We pride ourselves on providing an excellent level of care with a strong supportive team environment. All staff are encouraged in their CPD/continuing education interests for which generous allowances are available. We welcome new ideas and the latest research and technology; we want to continue to be leaders and innovators in our field. New Zealand offers many opportunities for outdoor activities, and your interests (equestrian or otherwise) outside of work are greatly supported.

Requirements

Job requirements will cover a variety of veterinary care, both in the field and at the hospital including, but not limited to, primary and emergency surgery, lameness evaluation, diagnostic imaging, specialist wound care, and endoscopic examinations. Of note is that both medical and surgical colic cases are generally admitted and managed by the medicine department, including during their post-operative recovery phase. While there is a general practitioner on call for routine emergencies, surgical emergency duties, which include evening, overnights, and weekend coverage, are shared with one other surgeon on a rotating basis. In addition, mentorship of our four interns and our visiting student externs and providing support to our general practitioners are important components of the role. The right applicant must be residency-trained or ACVS/ECVS-certified. Ideally the candidate should have knowledge of both racehorse and sport horse care and enjoy being a team player in a busy work environment.

Remuneration

The remuneration package includes a competitive salary, shared emergency fees, paid time off for afterhours work, use of a vehicle including maintenance fees and fuel, generous CPD allowance, New Zealand veterinary licensure, NZVA membership, ACVS/ECVS membership, and paid professional liability.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and CV to [email protected].
