Large Animal ECVS Residency position
Starting August 1st 2024
The Equine Clinic of Meslay opens a 3-year residency in large animal surgery (equine option) for the period 2024 - 2027. The training program will allow the candidate to acquire in-depth knowledge of surgery and related disciplines (orthopedics, medical imaging, anesthesiology, internal medicine, pathology) following the guidelines of ECVS (European College of Veterinary Surgeons).
Clinic
The Equine Clinic of Meslay is a private practice in the northwest of France. This region stands out because of the high breeding and training activity of race, sport and leisure horses. The team comprises of 22 veterinarians, including 1 ECVS diplomates and 1 ECEIM diplomate. The clinic is composed of 6 specialized units: surgery (with 2 fully equipped surgical theaters), lameness investigation and Computed tomography, intensive care and neonatology, internal medicine, isolation and theriogenology. We see an average of 1900 hospitalized patients per year of which 800 surgeries.
Prerequisites
Be a graduate veterinarian of a veterinary college recognized by ECVS and licensed to practice in a European country
Have completed a one-year standard rotating internship or have at least two years of clinical training in a well-equipped multi-person large animal practice
Have a good knowledge of the English language
A basic working knowledge of the French language is advised
Program
The program duration will be 3 years (156 weeks). The resident will work with ECVS-Diplomates and a last year ECVS resident. At least 108 weeks will be spent in surgery under the supervision of at least one ECVS Diplomate. The resident will work 2 weeks (80 hours) under the supervision of our ECEIM Diplomate. Medical imaging, anesthesiology and pathology rotations will be performed outside the practice with respective specialists. The resident must participate in the out-of-hours emergency duty rota and intensive care services of the hospital. A period equivalent to 20 weeks will be available to develop and implement a clinical research project and to write 2 publications aimed at journals approved by the ECVS publication list. Participation in congresses, meetings and additional courses will be financed by the practice. At the end of the program, the resident will be able to submit his or her application file to the ECVS in order to receive permission to sit the board certifying exam.
